1979 NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft made its closest approach to Jupiter at a distance of 570,000 km (350,000 miles) from the planet’s cloud tops. It discovered a few rings around Jupiter, as well as volcanic activity on the moon Io.

1922 American swimmer Johnny Weissmuller broke Duke Kahanamoku’s world record in the 100-meters freestyle, swimming it in 58.6 seconds.

1900 Queen Victoria gave Royal Assent to The Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act, which created the Commonwealth of Australia, thus uniting separate colonies on the continent under one federal government.

1886 American engineer and chemist Charles Martin Hall filed a patent for an inexpensive electrolysis method for producing aluminum (US Patent 400,664, Process of reducing aluminium from its fluoride salts by electrolysis).
